Eye & Sight
About 80 percent of human perception takes place via the eyes. This applies to the selection of clothes, the orientation in traffic or the information retrieval during reading, watching TV and working at the computer.
If this sensory perception is significantly limited, someone is considered to have a visual impairment or a visual disability up to blindness. In the United Stated there are about 7.3 million visually impaired (National Federation of the blind, blindness statistics 2013).
Most visual impairments occur as a result of age-related eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy. Approximately 85% of the visually impaired are aged over 60.
